Well, things are moving forward here in Egypt and people continue to be optimistic. Today the military declared that they would not field a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections, which is a very good sign. But the issue remains, where does Egypt go from here? What is the vision for the New Egypt?
Because of Sekem's influence in government and policy circles, the CEO of the Sekem Holding Company, Helmy Abouleish, has been meeting with the new Prime Minister to discuss the way forward. As a result, the Prime Minister asked for suggestions on what the vision for a New Egypt might look like. So Helmy gathered a group of us to hammer out a potential vision which he will present to the Prime Minister. Below is the vision we developed.
We envision a true democracy for Egypt serving the will of the people ...
with accountable and independent institutions safeguarding equality and freedom of expression;
with a strong pluralistic civil society; and where the satisfaction of the basic needs of all people is
guaranteed.
We envision healthy, happy and inspired Egyptian people ...
Who have access to an innovative, holistic and independent education, developing their moral,
intellectual, spiritual and physical capacity to ensure sustainable development for Egypt, while
building a lighthouse for the arts, cultural and religious exchange.
We envision a sustainable Egyptian market economy ...
focusing on people as well as profit, and using natural resources responsibly to ensure food and
energy security; and where a thriving, innovative business sector is providing high quality goods
and services while creating sufficient numbers of decent jobs.
We envision a clean Egyptian environment ...
With clean streets and countryside, a clean river Nile, oceans and beaches, and high air quality;
and where enough fertile land nourishes people, animals and plants in balanced ecosystems.
So, what do you think? I would love to hear your feedback!
From Cairo and the New Egypt, Sam
